How to Audit a Chinese BESS Enclosure Supplier: The Procurement Manager's 7-Point Checklist

Author: DINGPRECISION Engineering Team | Date: July 2026 | Reading Time: 5 minutes

Introduction

You've found three potential BESS enclosure suppliers with competitive quotes and professional websites. But how do you know which one will truly deliver on time, on spec, and on budget?

This checklist is based on DINGPRECISION's experience serving Midea, Huawei, and KUKA, along with our own supplier qualification processes. It helps you quickly verify a supplier's real capabilities—beyond the promises.

7 Core Audit Questions

1. Are all four core processes done in your own factory?

Why It Matters: Over 80% of sheet metal factories in Guangdong only handle laser cutting and bending in-house. Welding and coating are subcontracted to third parties. Every handoff introduces quality risk.

What to Check: Ask to see the coating line on-site—it must be in the same building as the cutting equipment.

Red Flag: The supplier cannot name or show a subcontractor, or admits to outsourcing.

DINGPRECISION Standard: All four processes are completed in our 15,000m² facility. No subcontracting.

2. What pre-treatment do you use before powder coating?

Why It Matters: Coating adhesion depends on surface preparation. Simple cleaning is insufficient for outdoor BESS enclosures exposed to rain, UV, and salt spray.

What to Check: The pre-treatment line should include: Degreasing → Rinse → Chemical Conversion (Zirconium/Phosphate) → Drying.

Red Flag: The answer is "we just clean it before spraying."

DINGPRECISION Standard: Three-stage pre-treatment (degreasing + zirconium conversion + DI water rinse). 1,000+ hour salt spray test certification.

3. Can I see a salt spray test report from the last three months?

What to Check: The report must reference ASTM B117, specify the coating system tested, and be dated within the last 3 months. This proves ongoing quality monitoring—not just a one-time certification test.

Red Flag: "We tested it during certification." Certifications don't guarantee daily production quality.

4. What is your welding first-pass yield rate? Can I see last month's data?

What to Check: First-pass yield should be ≥99%. Robotic welding is preferred for repetitive joints. Air-tightness testing should be performed on critical seams.

Red Flag: All manual welding, no yield tracking, no air-tightness testing.

DINGPRECISION Standard: 4 robotic welding stations, yield rate ≥99.5%, deformation control ≤1mm/m.

5. Who are your top three customers? Can I speak with one of them?

What to Check: If the supplier has passed quality audits from Fortune 500 companies like Midea or Huawei, their quality system has been stress-tested.

Red Flag: "Customer information is confidential." A legitimate factory should be able to name its major customer segments.

DINGPRECISION Standard: Clients include Midea (1M+ units/year, defect rate ≤0.2%), Huawei, KUKA Robotics, and China Southern Power Grid.

6. What happens when a batch fails QC?

What to Check: The supplier should have a formal 8D or CAPA corrective action process with root cause analysis (e.g., 5-Why), not just part replacement. There should be full traceability from finished product back to raw material batch and shift.

Red Flag: "We just rework and ship it." No root cause analysis means problems will repeat.

7. What is your on-time delivery rate for the last 6 months?

What to Check: OTD rate should be ≥98%. The supplier should use an ERP system for production scheduling and have buffer capacity for urgent orders.

Red Flag: Production is managed via spreadsheets or whiteboards with no ERP system.

Audit Dimension

What to Check

In-House Capability

Are all four processes in the same facility?

Quality Certification

Valid ISO 9001:2015? For EU: RoHS, REACH compliance

Precision Control

SPC data or CpK value (target ≥1.33) for critical dimensions

Defect Rate

PPM (defects per million). World-class: ≤0.2%

Financial Health

Check solvency and cash flow to avoid supply disruptions

Conclusion

The lowest quote rarely comes from the most reliable supplier. When a BESS enclosure fails in the field, the cost isn't just the replacement part—it's system downtime, emergency logistics, and damaged customer relationships.

Invest the time upfront. Ask these 7 questions. Judge by data, not promises. That's how you build a resilient, high-quality supply chain.
